Quadriplegic driver makes Goodwood Competition racing debut

Former IndyCar driver Sam Schmidt was paralysed from the shoulders down in a racing accident in 2000.

Now, 21 years later, he’s making his debut at Goodwood Competition of Pace in a semi-autonomous automotive that’s managed with head actions for turns and “sip-and-puff” management for acceleration.

Mr Schmidt based and co-owns the Arrow McLaren SP, which has gained 12 IndyCar races.

In 2013, he partnered with a crew of engineers at Arrow Electronics with the aim of getting him to drive a racing automotive once more.
